The Nationals were a total wreck fest, along with a bunch of blown motors. They used so much speedy dry, that the poor tour cars impounded in the infield looked like something from Desert Storm.
Legends car count was down to about 200, from 300 the last times in '04 and' 07 and the high point in '01 with about 400 entries.
Some B and C mains were cancelled due to the car count and wrecked cars in the heats, leaving some long gaps in the schedule. The track failed to move the Inex schedule up to insure that all classes would get their full laps and still get the Tour cars on track in time for their TV coverage. It seems that no one in the tower remembers that the Legends are usually caution filled events, and even more so for the Nationals. The Masters division didn't finish until well after midnight. Lucky for them, though as those old geezers are usually waking up about then to go to the bathroom.
Racing was dominated by out of towners, unlike the days when the Bullring sported names like Kyle Busch, Spencer Clark and Justin Johnson.
The best local finishers were Chris Trickle, 3rd in Bandos, Ed Hohman 6th in Roadsters and Rick Rogas 5th in Masters. Local Pro hopefulls Dustin Ash and Alex Haase were both DQ'd. Ash for underweight and Haase for moving under the red flag ( I think). A real whazzup for a couple of guys who have been in Legends for 10 years.
Naturally there was no publicity for the event, and unless you were involved in racing you would not have known it was going on. Too bad, because the new crop of Inex drivers would be kids who come out to see the races with their parents.
Back on Sept. 3rd, there was a demo derby that got cancelled and they announced to the crowd that their tickets would be good for either the Legends Nationals or Open Comp. There was some resistance when I presented my Sept. 3 ticket, but they did take it. I suspect that at the Open, a lot of people will walk through the gate with those old tickets.
