TRIPLE DIGIT SPEEDS EXCEED TEMPERATURE AT RACY ROUND 4
Rosamond, CA - Saturday, August 29, 2015 - The Toyota Southwest Super Lates Series had a GREAT Round 4 weekend of V8 Stock Car and Truck racing. The weather was more than cooperative at 95 degrees which was cooler than many other parts of the southwest. However, the racing and driver performances were nothing short of HOT, well into triple digit speeds!
Race Liberante captured the Ron’s Rear Ends Fast Time award securing the pole at 1:21.395 at an average speed just under 111 MPH! This is Race’s third pole position this season in as many attempts. Other qualifying highlights include Michelle Nagai who set her fastest time yet at 1:24.190 which placed her 4th on the starting grid. Steve Hamilton qualified 6th with a 1:27.194 and Sam Peterson qualified 7th at 1:29.985, both racers setting personal best fast times at the Fastest Road in the West. Peterson, a former Jet Ski racer and rookie with the Toyota Southwest Super Lates Series Sam also claimed the Reeves Complete Auto Center Hard Charger Award and has proven that he is fast on both water and land.
Cory Fancy, multi-time Series Champion claimed the top of the podium for the second time this season. Fancy blistered the 50 mile race pace in under 30 minutes with a ¼ lap lead. This strong performance strengthened Fancy’s 2015 points lead as well. Cory and his fine team continue to support their mult-time championships efforts with their strong program.
Young Andrew Porter from the Quick Pick Motorsports team finished a career best 2nd place. Porter, who does double duty racing in the Spec Super Trucks Class, is a relative newcomer to Road Racing and has taken to the high speeds and technical nature of “Big Willow” like a veteran. The 3rd place position on the podium was captured by veteran NASCAR driver Ron Esau. Esau, who was NASCAR’s first Southwest Tour Series Champion in 1986 has many laps around Willow Springs including a victory at the track that same year. This strong finish vaults Esau into 3rd place in 2015 Series points.
The Spec Super Trucks were next on the track. Double Duty Racer Andrew Porter remains undefeated in this class for 2015 as he captured his third victory continuing to grow his points lead. Second place was multi-surface racer Brian Jeffrey. Jeffrey, who with his sons have captured multiple class and overall SCORE Off-Road Desert Racing Championships is fine going fast on dirt and asphalt, buggy, UTV, or truck. Quick Pick Motorsports Patriarch, Kenny Smith rounded out the group with a fine 3rd place finish. Smith, a racing veteran, is the Grandfather of Andrew Porter and is 3 for 3 with strong podium finishes in 2015.
There are three remaining events in 2014 for the Toyota Southwest Super Lates Series. The next event, Round 5, is Saturday, September 19th. The makeup date for “Rained Out Round 3” is Saturday, November 7th at the Big Bore Bash with the Vintage Auto Racing Association. We are honored to be special guests of VARA at one of the largest Vintage Racing events on the west coast. The final event of 2015 will be the Bill Huth Classic on December 12th. This extra special event will be a celebration of the founder of Willow Springs International Raceway, Bill Huth, who passed away earlier this year. Huth, a true innovator of safety and showmanship in the world of Motorsports, was the founder of the Toyota Southwest Super Lates Series. Details of events and special guests will be coming soon.
