Hey all,
Just to let you all know, Mike was asking some of the Charger drivers on Saturday what we thought about going back to the 800 series tires on the chargers.
He said a few drivers asked about going back to the 800 tires because it would be cheaper and they could get though a season on 2 or 3 sets of tires. He thought the cost savings was about 13 bucks a tire.
I told him I wanted to stay with the 970's. We've all setup our cars on these tires. Secondly, we just switched 2 years ago. I don't believe many of us have any of the old 800 tires just setting around ready to go. We would have to spend a GOOD DEAL of money just to get tires and spares. Not only that, many drivers got though the 2009 season on 3 sets of 970 tires. Also, the 800's are slower, so we would be losing a bit of speed as well. We have enough problems getting tires now and I for one don't want to deal with another type of tire again.
I say we stay with the 970's. If some drivers wish to go to the 800 series tires, let them do it. I just DON'T see any cost savings when you look at the bigger picture. It would cost us ALL A LOT more to switch than to just stay with the current 970's.
Make sure to get your thoughts into Mike, He was nice enough to ask us our opinion.

I was talking to a racer today that said the 970 have gone up in price. I don't think that you guys going to like the new prices for tires. It is going to screw up my budget. I agree with you letrace I wont to go fast too. Also I know that you said getting tires is not a easy thing. I agree with that also. Also 970 take off tires from late models will not be able this year and the same for mods. I think the track and the racers need to have a meeting about maybe going to a new tire that we be fast and be able to last 3 or 4 races that is not going to cost a arm and a leg. God only knows what the guys will be paying for super late tires. Like I said in the Begin of this post this is all hear say. If it is true i think alot of guys are not going to be happy about it.

The Lucas Oil Modified Series is going to go with a Hoosier 700 Series tire. They did some testing by letting a few of the slower guys run this tire during a non points race at Havasu and a driver who usually qualifies near the rear, made the trophy dash. I am not sure how long they will last but I know the cost is only like $80.00 a tire. Just food for thought.

Jim thats what Iam talking about $80.00 a tire. This will help all the racers budgets. i do not know about the rest of the racers out there but this year is not going to be easy for me with money. My sponsors are still helping me but not the same as last year the economy is in the nutser. So $80.00 a tire will help.

Sorry about the mis-information on the price, I think I got the $80.00 from talking with Bill at a Havasu race. Still $107.00 is better. Less than $450.00 for a set. Still not sure how long they will last though, especially on a 700 lb heavier car.

If you dig around on the Interweb there are several local tracks using 790s on 80s metrics like a cross between a Bomber and Chargers. Dells Raceway Park has a couple good examples. The Bomber like class is 3400#, 52% minimum front, 42% minimum right. A total of ten new tires allowed per season, all registered at the track barn, $90 each. The next class up is 3150# with a 602 crate and metric, like a Charger/Latemodel metric. www.dellsracewaypark.com/stars/divisionsHooiser says the 790s are from the START program and no points fund or contengencies are available. Were you guys getting any payback from the 970s? Dave
