Did the SLM race seem like the last race of the year? Why the heck so many wrecks? Has the 88 car confused the demo derby with the SLM main feature? Anyone else want to know

It was a crash fest. So, much damage. I hope they can all repair the cars so thay can keep up the car count and put on the good shows as they have always done. Good luck to all the SLM drivers and crews.

The 88 car has yet to finish a lap. 1st race wrecked on lap 1 in turn 4, 2nd race wrecked at the start/finish line........Maybe they should focus on legends a bit longer before moving up to the big cars...

This is not meant to be negative or “bashing” to anyone nor do I have anyone specific in mind with any of the comments as to why the wreck fest occurred. This is just an observation from the weekend.
1.) A surprise impound race with no changes other then tire pressure and tape being allowed (which accomplished nothing).
2.) One practice for 5 minutes (2 groups for 10 minutes)
3.) No trophy dash for use as a final tune.
4.) New tire for the class (a lot of drivers who don't race Irwindale are still getting used to them) and it is the 2nd race of the year so I am sure some guys ran tires from the last race to see what they do.
5.) Break checking by the leader.
6.) Passing before the start finish on the inside was allowed (allowed in the sense that it happened and no penalties were issued).
7.) Lots of “rookie” drivers still learning (they might not still be considered rookies by the track standards but the drivers themselves will tell you they still consider themselves rookies and are still learning).
While I understand the reasoning behind the track doing an impound race and applaud them for trying something different in an attempt to catch anyone who may be cheating, I don’t agree with the format or secrecy.
Good luck to all of those involved in the wrecks, I hope to see everyone back for the next race. It’s nice to see 20 or so cars race consistently week after week. It makes for a good show.

BB, good points. Think #7 nails the cause. Not sure how the impound affects the crashes on the first lap but I agree with the observations.
Hope this isn't how the remaining SLM mains will be. There won't be many left running at the end of the season if many more races like these.
Good luck to the ones that crashed and hope to see them at the track next week.
