The K&N West series was at Irwindale this weekend. 3 guys from Vegas, Taylor Barton, Dusty Davis and Justin Johnson were entered. Johnson and Davis were making their first starts in the series for the Vision Airlines team, while Barton was making his 4th start for the Thompson Motorsports team. Johnson, who is currently leading the Super Late points at Irwindale served notice to the West cars that he is a contender. He qualified 3rd, while Barton was a solid 13th and Davis was 20th. Johnson ran as high as 2nd until lap 80 when he tangled with a spinning lapped car. This sent him to the rear of the field. Davis and Barton were running about mid-pack at this point. Davis was steady and by the half time break he was up to 9th. Johnson had climbed from the back to 16th just edging Barton who ended up 17th at halftime. On the restart, Johnson started working through the field, and within 10 laps was 8th when he tangled with the 10 car and both were out for good. Davis ran a clean race and avoided all the wrecks finishing 8th while Barton came home 12th. Johnson ended up 24th. All 3 drivers made good showings, Barton running a limited schedule for the Thompson team has 3 top 15 finishes out of 4 starts while Davis gets a top 10 in his first outing. Johnson made a big impression with his speed even though he had a disappointing finish.
7-5-10 Update- Got more details from folks who were there- Johnson and the 17 car were racing side by side and Johnson's spotter gave him a clear signal too soon and he tangled with the 17 car. The 10 car was an innocent victim of the deal. Johnson apologised to both drivers for the mistake.

Once again Taylor Barton proved that when he had serious competition, a track he did not grow up with and a car that is legal, he can drive worth crap. You can't buy talent no matter what hype and hubbub he can muster.
Not a fan of Johnson's any way you look at it but seems apparent the boy may have some talent somewhere. Maybe Kyle Busch needs to take a look at Johnson and give him a shot in his 51 car and really see what he has. That would tell the tale. We may find that it still is a farce with all of the smoke and mirrors but a truer test of what he is made of.

Congrats to them all. It's nice to see racers from around here getting opportunities, especially the young ones. I know I would have loved the opportunities to race something 'bigger' but since I didn't, I still think it's great that these young men have the chance. Trying to make it big is tougher than just being a good driver, there is much more involved these days. Hopefully they can make a breakthrough. Best of luck to them all.

Saw the race on Speed last night. Davis ran a smart race and stayed out of trouble- Johnson could have won it if it wasn't for the 17 car holding him up at 2 different times. Saw an article on the internet this morning about the US and Russia exchanging spys at the Vienna airport- the plane caught my eye. Maybe Vision should put Dusty and Justin on all the planes- like that WWII nose art. [/img] Attachments:

Coulda woulda shoulda, instead his car sat in the pits like a mangled soda can. Classic Johnson style. As for sweetcheeks, he'll win races in the west series after: 22 crew chiefs, 11 cars, 62 engine builders, 20 million dollars and 99 other problems, but he won't be one. Hey topfive, you forgot a little on your chin.

The thing to remember about the plane is that the US government uses the lowest bidder when it contracts out work. Must say something about the Vision Air(heads).

As for me, Coulda woulda shoulda after: 22 crew chiefs, 11 cars, 62 engine builders, 20 million dollars and 99 other problems, I'll still be a clown running around the Bullring. Greencard, you must be on meth again- had your words all mixed up- I sorted them out for you.

Neither, just like to see young guys making smart decisions and moving forward - You and Greencard don't like them, but you never say who your favorite driver is- How about posting something about your guy and skipping all the negatives.

They didn't make the decision to go outside the bullring it was given to them. I would like to see justin move on also he deserves it, outside of running into everything on the track until he gets to the front. Dusty Davis does not deserve the credit, he is a perfect example of money buying a driver some talent. Let me ask you this topfive; where would Davis be without vision air? On top of that I think you just threw all the bullring drivers who are not funded as well as vision air under the hauler. You must work for vision, your attitude is fitting; you think everyone has half a million to blow in less than a year to go racing. Pick the bullrings top young drivers and put them up against Johnson and dusty, heads up your given a car to race, no crew chief, no millions, no daddys, just a toolbox and a race car, who wins?I don't think you need to answer that, but that's what I call talent. It's people like this that deserve an unlimited ride.

I'm a fan of every hard working young or old driver, crew person, die hard fan and family member in the pits. Walk up and down the pits sometimes you come upon a pit with the driver turning the wrenches, from bandos to bombers, legends to supers. Then you walk by the vision air camp, ten people on each car, drivers are in the air conditioned cabin playin x-box. The lobster and champagne are on the table getting hot, you want to introduce yourself but can't because the pit area is chained up, your not welcome. Your right we all must be a bunch of clowns running around the bullring never getting anywhere, but we don't have fun money to blow. We race for the fun, the passion and the will to win and the bullring is all we have. So for those of us that wish to put the bullrings politics to the side, show up on race day and give it our all, from bandleros and bombers to chargers and superlates I think I speak for us all. We are RACERS, better yet we are THE BULLRING! So maybe you should pick a local driver to spout off about week in and week out and be positive about the people that we all support. As for vision air, they won't be back. Tried to buy up the bullring, cycled through drivers, people, crew cheifs, broke commitments and left some that left something to work for them with nothing. They've found a home, I think there are some local drivers patiently waiting for a vision car to come back to the bullring:)

the vision team does have money...however for u to say there drivers do not wrench on there cars is total bs...ive personally seen justin johnson, jimmy parker, and the driver they had befor johnson think it was ash wrenching on there cars, giving info to the head crew guy, and trying to make there cars faster (i didnt include dusty davis in there because i dont know who he is never seen him and he could have walked up and slapped I disagree and i wouldnt know who he was) they are all hard working guys and deserve respect just cause they got an oppertunity to play with the big boys and have more $ then any driver at the local level dont be jealous. johnson is one of the most talented drivers i have seen at the bullring or in irwindale in a long time. no im not a fan of vision airlines team nor do i agree with any of there disicions they make but if they knocked on my door and offered me a ride u better belive i would explore that oppertunity...and idk anyone else that would turn them down look at jimmy parker left a good team to run for them and they back stabbed him and left him out to die but i dont belive he would ever regret taking the oppertunity regardless of the outcome.
just my .02

Guys like Greencard are just envious of anyone who climbs up the ladder toward success. He has not been around long enough to know that Johnson started in Bandos10-12 years ago and fought his way up with very little money through Legends, Roadsters, Late Models and Supers to get where he is today. He ate hot dogs and cheeseburgers all the way- let him have a little lobster now.

In an earlier post I stated Justin deserves what he has. Il give you a bit of advice, as a Johnson fan it would be in your best interest to include Dusty Davis every time you say Johnsons name. Daddy Davis doesn't like others taking his boys spotlight, the bottom line is Dusty Davis is why vision started, Justin can be swept under the door just as fast as the others were. It will be interesting to see how the season unfolds, when bill has realized how much money he has put into his race team and realizes he can't go on without some primary sponsorship. Who will be cut first? Probably the one with the talent right.
